Press Release: 16 June 2014
Triumphant Trumpton Trio Return
A group of three fire fighters have returned triumphant from a “Top Gear” style challenge which saw them journey 2,000 miles to Monte Carlo and back in 5 days. The group transformed a clapped out Ford Mondeo, purchased for just £200, into a special fire car, to take part in the Monte Carlo or Bust challenge alongside 80 other teams.
Mark Edwards, Lee Burnett and Pete Cochrane of Erith Fire Station began the challenge on Thursday 5 June, journeying from Bexleyheath to Dover and via ferry to Calais, then on to Namur in Belgium where the race began. Over the following three days they journeyed 1500 miles through, Germany, Switzerland and Italy, arriving in Monte Carlo on Sunday evening (8 June). Along the way the trio posed in an array of costumes for theme nights, took on many challenges and completed a scavenger hunt to earn points, which finally led to them finishing in a brilliant second place.
But the focus behind the teams exploits was to raise money for a colleague’s young daughter, Maia Harvey, who suffers with a rare life-limiting disease called leukodystrophy. The money raised will be split between the Harvey family and Demelza Hospice Care for Children, where Maia receives respite care.
The car, christened “Balina” by fifteen year-old Maia, made it over the Alps and even over took a Ferrari on the streets of Monte Carlo, where the team (dressed as red air hostesses for the final day) posed outside the casino.
“It was an incredible trip and a lot of fun,” said Mark Edwards. “We were so happy that Balina made it all the way to Monte Carlo. When we arrived we parked up next to a Ferrari outside the casino and people were taking pictures, even the concierge came out and asked if he could take one, it was crazy!”
The original plan was for the car to be crushed after arriving in Monte Carlo, but at the 11th hour a sponsor stepped in and paid out the extra money to enable the group to drive the car back home.
“We’re really grateful to Nightingale Consultants for sponsoring the trip home,” said Lee Burnett. At one point we didn’t think Balina would make it as we had a lot of trouble with oil, but she pulled through and we are chuffed that we’ll be able to reunite the car with Maia.”
